One of the characteristics of the Japanese people is their delicate workmanship together with an abundance of motifs that personify the versatility of their traditional arts. Paper stencils for dyeing are found among these arts and although they are not exclusive to Japan, they enjoyed greater usage here and form an important part of the colorful world of dyeing arts, as well as being a source of pride to the craftsman.
All motifs pictured in this book come from original paper stencils that were used in the 19th and 20th centuries. This book represents the collection of Tsuneo Yoshioka, a textile expert, who carefully amassed these stencils over many years.
